Extreme weather events are a component of the Kimberley climate.

The region is located within an area prone to tropical cyclones. In addition to cyclone occurrences, severe tropical storms with localised but destructive winds are commonplace, in particular during and in the months leading up to the tropical summer season.

Tropical cyclones and other intense low pressure systems can bring heavy and sustained rainfall. It is common for a significant amount of an area's annual rainfall to be recorded in one single event.

Intense rain events are an important component of the Kimberley ecosystem. They bring water to the rivers, streams and springs, and to underground aquifers. They also bring major flood events as river systems are worked to capacity.
