Communications in the Kimberley

The six major population centres in the Kimberley have access to the national telecommunications network, ABC national television, SBS, WIN and GWN commercial television. A community TV station, GTV 35, operates in Broome.

In addition, people in or near these centres receive ABC Radio National, ABC Regional and commercial station WAFM. North West Radio is also received in Broome, Derby and Kununurra with community radio being available in most centres and some remote communities.

Most of the larger Aboriginal communities and resource development projects are serviced by the Digital Radio Concentrator System that provides connections to the national telecommunications network. This technology provides limited television, telephone and remote data access to more isolated locations. Progressive improvements are being made in the provision of communications services.

The towns of Broome, Derby and Kununurra have points of presence for Internet Service Providers.

All Kimberley towns and several major mining operations have access to digital mobile telephone services.
