There are a range of businesses and organisations operating in various industry sectors in the Region. Most activities occur in the urban centres of Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Kununurra and Wyndham. The 2001 Census provides the most recent data on the service sectors contribution to employment by industry (see table, page 8). At the time, 12.6 per cent of the Region's workforce was employed in the wholesale and retail sector, 6.7 per cent in accommodation and restaurants, 7.4 per cent in personal and other services and 5.5 per cent in property and business services.
Retail Turnover
Retail turnover is a key indicator of economic and population growth. The last retail Census, conducted in 1991, indicated that the Region's retail turnover was approximately $122.8 million. Estimates have since been derived by the Department of Local Government and Regional Development based on annual changes in the State and the Region's population, and the State retail turnover figures. For 2004/05, retail turnover was estimated at $330.2 million.
PROJECT INVESTMENT
Investment is a vital part of the Kimberley Region's economic growth and development. Investment value has stayed relatively stable in the Region ranging between $544 million to $664 million per quarter. As at June Quarter 2005, there were 11 projects worth a total of $469 million under construction and a further 8 projects valued at $153 million under the planning and consideration stage.
MANUFACTURING
Manufacturing in the Kimberley contributes to economic activity of the Region and supports the tourism, pearling, construction, maritime, agriculture and mining industries. Manufacturing activities include production associated with the construction and metal fabrication industries, and machinery and equipment.
The 2001 Manufacturing Census provides the most recent data available, which indicated 135 manufacturing locations in the Region. Total wages and salaries paid were estimated at $13.0 million and sales and service income estimated at $73.3 million. The population Census in 2001 recorded that the manufacturing sector employed 3.6 per cent of the Region's workforce.
