REGIONAL MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS PROJECT
The Regional Mobile Communications Project will deliver terrestrial mobile, voice and high speed wireless data broadband to improve highway and town-to-town coverage in regional, rural and remote communities of the State.
The project is funded through Royalties for Regions and is administered by the Department of Commerce in consultation with the Department of Regional Development and Lands with Kimberley specific assistance provided by the Commission regarding site selection.
Through the project new mobile communications infrastructure will be provided at 113 sites across the State, increasing mobile phone coverage by up to 22 per cent and boosting access to next generation broadband services. Outcomes of the project include increased productivity, improve road safety, enhance the delivery of emergency services, and better regional, rural and remote communities
25 sites in the Kimberley along the Great Northern Highway have been identified to receive this infrastructure upgrade.

The six major population centres: Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Wyndham and Kununurra have access to the national telecommunications network. A community TV station, GTV 35, operates in Broome.
People in or near these centres receive ABC Radio National, ABC Kimberley, Warringarri, Wangki, Broome FM, 6DBY, Puranyangu, Goolari, Spirit Radio and WAFM.
Standard Telephone Services and payphones are provided by Telstra. A standard telephone landline connection is available to all houses and businesses.
Telstra's Next G network is the primary mobile phone network in the Kimberley.
Residential broadband internet access is available using ADSL, Satellite and Wireless technologies.
NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK (NBN)
The NBN is progressively being rolled out and new housing estates are being prepared to be NBN ready. Further information can be found at www.nbn.gov.au.
